Gin Martini
The Martinez is a cocktail made with gin—originally the sweeter Old Tom gin—combined with sweet vermouth, a splash of maraschino liqueur, and a dash of bitters. Its sweet, herbal flavor is thought to have developed as a variation of the Manhattan, which features rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters.
In 1900, a drink called the Marguerite appeared in Harry Johnson’s Bartender’s Manual. This recipe closely resembles today’s dry Martini, leading some to believe that the use of Martini & Rossi vermouth in the Marguerite may have inspired the modern Martini’s name.
